Circuit Zolder
Circuit Zolder
The Circuit Zolder (pronounced: Solder) is a 3977 meter long motorsport racetrack in the town of Zolder-Terlaemen near Hasselt in Belgium. It was planned by the Dutchman Hans Hugenholtz and opened in 1963 by the local Zolder Motorsport Club. Between 1973 and 1984, the Belgian Formula 1 Grand Prix was held here a total of ten times. In 1980, the Belgian Grand Prix for motorcycles was held here.
The Circuit Zolder is best known for the fact that the Canadian Gilles Villeneuve was killed in an accident during qualifying for the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix. Instead of the fast right-hand bend at the time, the so-called Gilles Villeneuve chicane now exists at the site of the accident.
In 2002, 2019 and 2020 (two weekends in 2020), the DTM was also a guest at Zolder, but nowadays it is mainly Benelux racing series that race here (e.g. Belcar, 24 Hours of Zolder, Formula Ford, Formula Renault).
